Berlin Intermediate School 2016

Creative Math Songs at B.I.S.

shapeimage_1.jpg

Berlin Intermediate School

Songs parodied: Shut Up and Dance; Stitches; Rolling in Deep; Treat You Better; Drag Me Down; Uptown Funk

Above is the room where we wrote all our songs, and a picture of what came from my fortune cookie on the final day of my residency at B.I.S.! And it’s true: I had a fantastic time at Berlin Intermediate School.

It’s near Ocean City, so I enjoyed warm weather, long flat roads, and 2 days bicycling the Boardwalk. The teachers and students were all excited and fun to work with.

Mathematics is probably my least favorite subject to write songs about, but these 4th graders managed to write some really fun lyrics. We performed them all on the final day for one another - a huge crowd since there are SIX classrooms of 4th graders! Great work!

Parody - Rolling in Deep lyrics - Mrs. Paul’s class - 10/11/2016

structure:
verse1: BIS math class in general
v2: Place value
v3: Rounding
v4: Multiplication
Pre-chorus: Taking math tests, how I feel, stress, worry, success
Chorus: Solving problems and thinking about numbers

verse 1: - B.I.S. Math Class in general
Math is like a fun confusing game
Miss Paul is awesome so I’m sure glad I came
Finally I can figure out five times three
Maybe you can find out the answer with me

verse 2: - Place value
One million, six zeros in a line
I have to round to tens for each and every dime
Scientists divide and multiply
Using the numbers to figure out where and why

pre-chorus: - taking math tests, how I feel, stress, worry, success
The kids are nervous they might flunk the test
They keep on thinking that they might not have them right
Teachers keep telling us: “Finish the test!”
I can’t stop raging

chorus: solving problems, thinking about numbers,
I wished I got an “A”
Instead I got a “B”
Math got my brain so confused
Can you teach us more please

verse 3: - rounding
I have rounded to the nearest ten
I’m rounding to the hundreds, many numbers stuck in my head
Rounding gives you answers short and sweet
I found the answer my paper is complete

pre-chorus: - taking math tests, how I feel, stress, worry, success
The kids are nervous they might flunk the test
They keep on thinking that they might not have them right
Teachers keep telling us: “Finish the test!”
I can’t stop raging

chorus: solving problems, thinking about numbers,
I wished I got an “A”
Instead I got a “B”
Math got my brain so confused
Can you teach us more please

verse 4: CLAP: - multiplication
Multiplication is very fun
Count your factors to see if you are done
Find the answer using an array
Once your model’s complete, shout out hip hip hooray!

bridge:
(You’re gonna wish you never missed a math day)
You couldn’t add at all
(Rounding all the numbers, rounding with my peeps)
You couldn’t add at all
(You’re gonna wish you never missed a math day)
At all, at all, at all

chorus:
I wished I got an “A”
Instead I got a “B”
Math got my brain so confused
Can you teach us more please

Stitches by Sean Mendes

structure:
Verse 1: Place Value
V2: Operation
Pre-chorus: Rounding
Chorus: How we use math: restaurant, engineer, building, science, vet, government, banking
Bridge: Number line or word problems or how I feel about math - nervous, excited etc

Verse 1:
Tens, hundreds, thousands in a line
They helped me find my place value just fine
Numbers will increase going left
I’d better know it so I can pass my test

Pre-chorus1 :
Got a feeling that I’ll fail the math test
But I know that the teacher might be sad
If I don’t study there’s a consequence
An F

Chorus:
I study math until I can’t sleep
When I am snoozing then I count sheep
Now I’m a expert engineer
The math I learned is clear
I don’t understand these
I’m begging “teacher come and help please”
And now that I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s

Verse 2:
Just like subtraction to division
Oh my hands hurt so I couldn’t do addition
These operations squish my brain
Now I’m gonna keep what I know
Use operations so I’m not slow

Pre-chorus 2:
Got a feeling that I’ll ace the math test
So I know that I’ll feel like Superman
Since I studied I feel like the best
I aced it

Chorus:
I study math until I can’t sleep
When I am snoozing then I count sheep
Now I’m a expert engineer
The math I learned is clear
I don’t understand these
I’m begging “teacher come and help please”
And now that I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s

Bridge:
Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein
Numbers on a line, yeah
It takes some time

Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein
Numbers on a line, yeah
It’s perfectly fine

Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein
Numbers on a line, yeah
It’s perfectly fine

Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein, smarter than Einstein

Chorus:
I study math until I can’t sleep
When I am snoozing then I count sheep

The math I learned is clear
I don’t understand these
I’m begging “teacher come and help please”
And now that I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s

verse2: Rounding
Bridge: Number line
Chorus: Math in real life / how I feel about math class / quiz /

verse 1:
I will add for you
All these math facts we’ve got to use
You can tell me if I’m wrong if I add them incorrectly
When you see that you have aced a quiz
And you’re spending all your time on this one operation
And when you thought that you were a whiz

chorus:
I know that I can do my homework like a boss
But Rex the doggie chewed it up and now it’s lost
Teacher asked, “Where’s your sheet?”
It’s underneath my feet
I thought I was in trouble instead
I know that I did my homework
Don’t give me an “F”

verse 2:
I'll round numbers too
The digit’s value is your clue
Five or above give it a shove, four or below then let it go
Baby rounding numbers with you
Rounding could be so easy, if you tried to do it
Tell me, what do I round to

chorus
I know that I can do my homework like a boss
But Rex the doggie chewed it up and now it’s lost
Teacher asked, “Where’s your sheet?”
It’s underneath my feet
I thought I was in trouble instead
I know that I did my homework
Don’t give me an “F”

Draw me a line
Make it straight, we’ll be fine
Arrows they go on the ends
Just know that you can
Because there’s no end
I’ll be by your side the whole time

chorus
I know that I can do my homework like a boss
But Rex the doggie chewed it up and now it’s lost
Teacher asked, “Where’s your sheet?”
It’s underneath my feet

Don’t give me an “F”

coda:
Don’t give me an “F”

Treat You Better (Shawn Mendes)
capo 1:
AmGF
I won't lie to you
I know he's just not right for you
And you can tell me if I'm off
But I see it on your face
When you say that he's the one that you want
And you're spending all your time
In this wrong situation
And anytime you want it to stop

chorus:
Am GF
I know I can treat you better
C
Than he can
And any girl like you deserves a gentleman
Tell me why are we wasting time
On all your wasted crime
When you should be with me instead
I know I can treat you better
Better than he can

v2:
I'll stop time for you
The second you say you'd like me too
I just wanna give you the loving that you're missing
Baby, just to wake up with you
Would be everything I need and this could be so different
Tell me what you want to do
chorus

bridge:
Give me a sign
Take my hand, we'll be fine
Promise I won't let you down
Just know that you don't
Have to do this alone
Promise I'll never let you down
chorus

That was easy
There are different place values
An example is the ones

Stitches parody - geometry

verse 1: how to find the area; multiply
You have to multiply the sides
Or you add the units up inside
We stuck some tape down on the floor
And we counted units up more and more

pre-chorus: how math class feels to me
I think that math is challenging
I wrote this song in math for us to sing
I think i might be going crazy
Move on

chorus: shapes and their attributes
We learned 'bout polygons with straight lines
And parallelograms with four sides
A bunch of Rectangles and Squares
Trapezoids right there
So every time we use shapes
My teacher helped me cuz she’s so great
My class worked really hard
Earned dojo points and stars

verse 2: how to find perimeter: add sides
You have to add up all the sides
To find perimeter and get it right
My dog chased the mailman away
So I had to build a fence so he’ll just stay

pre-chorus: how math class feels to me
I think that math is challenging
I wrote this song in math for us to sing
I think i might be going crazy
Move on

chorus: shapes and their attributes
We learned 'bout polygons with straight lines
And parallelograms with four sides
A bunch of Rectangles and Squares
Trapezoids right there
So every time we use shapes
My teacher helped me cuz she’s so great
My class worked really hard
Earned dojo points and stars

bridge: describe shapes: flat, pointy, etc

Measured rectangles all day
Perimeter is sixteen

pre-chorus:
Math class is getting boring
Hours and hours every morning

Lets go cuz its finally lunch time

chorus:
You learn it in math, rectangles are cool
The sides are straight, I learned in school
Right angles four sides, thats the rule,
Shapes are awesome, my brains a tool

An octagon has eight sides
A stop signs in my way

Throw it in the trash just make it disappear
If you swallow it gets stuck in your gut for several years,
Don’t chew it, or eat it

You better ride your bike to get from ‘round here
You spin the pedals and rotate the gears
If you pedal too fast, you oughta be scared
So stop it, just squeeze the brakes

so spin it, pedal it, squeeze it, rotate it
Inventions are so creative
Do lots of jobs, they help our lives
Just like a stapler, they make it all right
So speed it, so speed it

verse 3:
You’d better lock the door or they’ll get in your house
Turn your front door key to keep them out
If your back door is unlocked they’ll come and sleep on your couch
So lock it, or they’ll steal your things

verse 4:
Money’s so important on the earth these days
People wanna hide it, lock it in a case
I wonder who made it, doesn’t matter anyway
So save it, keep it in a vase

Inventions are so creative
Do lots of jobs, they help our lives
Just like a stapler, they make it all right
So speed it, so speed it

Hello Desert
parody of Hello by Adele

V1:
Hello, desert
Watch out for cacti cuz their needles seriously hurt
I’ve no water, I could die
A desert bobcat chewed my leg and I’m gonna say bye bye.

V2:
Grasslands, hot and dry
I can’t see all of the cheetahs cuz the grass is way too high
Lion’s prey will clearly die
The antelopes can’t get away even if they really try

Pre-chorus 1:
There’s such a difference of habitats
And tons of blossoming plants

Chorus 1:
Hello from these different lands
Plains, trees and desert sand
To find a habitat as good as gold
I’d hate to live in a place that’s too cold

Chorus 2:
Hello, from all habitats
In the grasslands there are wildcats
The desert is scorching and sizzling hot
Predators and prey, it’s the circle of life, lion’s roar.
V3:
Hello, it’s raining
It’s so tropical and humid and my view is blocked by trees
A frog’s in my food
It is dreary, I am traumatized and I don’t know what to do

Pre-chorus 2:
There’s such a difference of species
And places they call home

Chorus 1:
Hello from these different lands
Plains, trees and desert sand
To find a habitat as good as gold
I’d hate to live in a place that’s too cold

Chorus 2:
Hello, from all habitats
In the grasslands there are wildcats
The desert is scorching and sizzling hot
Predators and prey, it’s the circle of life

Chorus 1:
Hello from these different lands
Plains, trees and desert sand
To find a habitat as good as gold
I’d hate to live in a place that’s too cold

Chorus 2:
Hello, from all habitats
In the grasslands there are wildcats
The desert is scorching and sizzling hot
Predators and prey, it’s the circle of life, lion’s roar.

All Searching For Their Food
parody of Shut Up and Dance with Me

chorus 1:
Oh don’t you make a sound
They have their eyes on you
You should stay off the ground
Or you will be a panther’s stew
The Ocean is cold, deep and blue
Creatures are roaming
All searching for their food

verse 1:
We were swimming with the fish
The angel, parrot, and clownfish
The ocean is endless, cold, and deep
But I surely wouldn’t live there
Surely couldn’t live there

pre-chorus 1:
It breathes with gills
It swam across the ocean
And found it’s family

chorus 2

verse 2:
Slick snakes in the understory
Rainforests, they grew thick for centuries
Alligators swimming in massive swamps
Birds they shed humongous feathers
Shed humongous feathers
pre-chorus 2
It’s so humid
Rainforests off the grid
It almost rains every day

chorus 3

bridge:
Deep in the trees
A panther’s stalking prey

Rainforests off the grid
It almost rains every day

chorus 4

chorus 5

coda:
Oh oh oh all searching for their food
Oh oh oh all searching for their food

________

I’ll Be Needing Seeds
parody of Stitches by Sean Mendes

Verse 1:
Savanna is the place to be
The cheetahs chasing zebras past the trees
Elephants roaming on the plains
With the lions ruffling their manes all day

Pre-Chorus 1:
I’m getting chased by a roaring lion
I don’t know if I’ll make it out alive
It looks really terrifying
Start running

Chorus 1:
The lion is chasing the zebra
Who’s hoping not to be a pizza
And the bird had better watch out
It might go up a snout
The Arctic Tundra’s so cold
With lichens that look a lot  like mold
And through the seasons wet and dry
The cheetahs hunt with pride

Verse 2:
Tundras are an icy cold place
Feels like needles whipping your icy white face
White foxes roam the snowy floor
There’s lots of lichen but no trees
A visit there would make you freeze

Pre-Chorus 2:
I see a hungry polar bear
If there was Wi-Fi I’d call 9-1-1
Then I start feeling the freezing air
Let’s go

Chorus 2:
Savannas,  grassy, wide and burning
The Tundras getting cold and freezing
And now that I’m without your trees
I’ll be needing seeds
The lions chase the zebras
The hunters race after the cheetahs
And now that I’m without your trees
I’ll be needing seeds

Bridge:
Lions on the plain
Gotta boogie far away
Lions on the plain
Gonna end up in pain
Lions on the plain
Oh gotta stay away
Wolf in the snow
Got  a real cold blow
Wolf in the cave
It’s a real windy day
Wolf in the snow
Got a real cold blow
Wolf’s in the cave
If I don’t get away I may end of as prey

Repeat Chorus 1 and 2

Coda:
Through the seasons wet and dry
The cheetahs hunt with pride
Now that I’m without your trees
I’ll be needing seeds

________

Sleep All Night
parody of Stressed Out by 21 Pilots

Verse 1:
I wish it wasn’t always snowy so I could see
I need some gear so I wouldn’t freeze
I wish I found some penguins in the snow
Every time I walk the wind feels like I’m slow-mo
When I’m in the arctic I feel really frigid
The ice covers the water like a its lid

Prechorus:
My name’s dragonfly and I live in a swamp
My name’s dragonfly and I live in a swamp

Wish we could be a wolf, living in the dark
Hunting for my prey, howl at the moon and sleep all night
Wish we could be a wolf, living in the dark
Hunting for my prey, howl at the moon and sleep all night

Verse 2:
One time a certain smell took me back to the forest trees
You can go camping here, you’ll be shocked at what you can see

Might get caught, trying to escape. I’d probably never escape it

Verse 3:
Wetland rainy, a bunch of alligator’s, so creepy
Slimy green frogs are everywhere so leapy and sleepy
Snakes, flowers, lily pads. Why does it have to be so sad
When the frogs are croaking I’m wondering if their joking

Water, caves, trees, and burrows, all to keep us animals warm
Gotta build a shelter to survive different storms

Habitats Rule the World by The Elginators; parody of Drag Me Down by One Direction

verse 1:
I’ve got the arctic as my home
I'm in an icy zone
I’ve never seen you look so freezing
I’m swimming with a seal
I really want to squeal
The temperature is now sub-freezing

pre-chorus 1:
Talk about creatures, there’s a lot of them
The ocean and the arctic have animals that swim
The polar bears and seals have lots of warm fur
Ocean depths with frigid temperature
Burr!

chorus 1:
Wondrous unique and cool
I learned about them with you in school
Look at the facts on google
With our help, these habitats rule the world

chorus 2:
Wondrous unique and cool
I learned about them with you in school
Look at the facts on google
With our help, these habitats rule the world
The ocean and arctic, these habitats rule the world
The ocean and arctic, these habitats rule the world

verse 2
In the water I am brave
I’m not scared of the waves
I’ve never seen the sea so crazy
I got an ocean in my heart
I’m swimming with the sharks
I’m not scared, the sharks are lazy

pre-chorus 2
Caribous munch moss in this habitat
If they went to McDonalds they would get too fat
With no plants in the ocean all the fish would die
Then the food chain would go bye bye
BYE!
