Berlin Intermediate School 2016

Creative Math Songs at B.I.S.

shapeimage_1.jpg

Berlin Intermediate School

Songs parodied: Shut Up and Dance; Stitches; Rolling in Deep; Treat You Better; Drag Me Down; Uptown Funk

Above is the room where we wrote all our songs, and a picture of what came from my fortune cookie on the final day of my residency at B.I.S.! And it’s true: I had a fantastic time at Berlin Intermediate School.

It’s near Ocean City, so I enjoyed warm weather, long flat roads, and 2 days bicycling the Boardwalk. The teachers and students were all excited and fun to work with.

Mathematics is probably my least favorite subject to write songs about, but these 4th graders managed to write some really fun lyrics. We performed them all on the final day for one another - a huge crowd since there are SIX classrooms of 4th graders! Great work!

Parody - Rolling in Deep lyrics - Mrs. Paul’s class - 10/11/2016

structure:
verse1: BIS math class in general
v2: Place value
v3: Rounding
v4: Multiplication
Pre-chorus: Taking math tests, how I feel, stress, worry, success
Chorus: Solving problems and thinking about numbers

verse 1: - B.I.S. Math Class in general
Math is like a fun confusing game
Miss Paul is awesome so I’m sure glad I came
Finally I can figure out five times three
Maybe you can find out the answer with me

verse 2: - Place value
One million, six zeros in a line
I have to round to tens for each and every dime
Scientists divide and multiply
Using the numbers to figure out where and why

pre-chorus: - taking math tests, how I feel, stress, worry, success
The kids are nervous they might flunk the test
They keep on thinking that they might not have them right
Teachers keep telling us: “Finish the test!”
I can’t stop raging

chorus: solving problems, thinking about numbers,
I wished I got an “A”
Instead I got a “B”
Math got my brain so confused
Can you teach us more please

verse 3: - rounding
I have rounded to the nearest ten
I’m rounding to the hundreds, many numbers stuck in my head
Rounding gives you answers short and sweet
I found the answer my paper is complete

pre-chorus: - taking math tests, how I feel, stress, worry, success
The kids are nervous they might flunk the test
They keep on thinking that they might not have them right
Teachers keep telling us: “Finish the test!”
I can’t stop raging

chorus: solving problems, thinking about numbers,
I wished I got an “A”
Instead I got a “B”
Math got my brain so confused
Can you teach us more please

verse 4: CLAP: - multiplication
Multiplication is very fun
Count your factors to see if you are done
Find the answer using an array
Once your model’s complete, shout out hip hip hooray!

bridge:
(You’re gonna wish you never missed a math day)
You couldn’t add at all
(Rounding all the numbers, rounding with my peeps)
You couldn’t add at all
(You’re gonna wish you never missed a math day)
At all, at all, at all

chorus:
I wished I got an “A”
Instead I got a “B”
Math got my brain so confused
Can you teach us more please

Stitches by Sean Mendes

structure:
Verse 1: Place Value
V2: Operation
Pre-chorus: Rounding
Chorus: How we use math: restaurant, engineer, building, science, vet, government, banking
Bridge: Number line or word problems or how I feel about math - nervous, excited etc

Verse 1:
Tens, hundreds, thousands in a line
They helped me find my place value just fine
Numbers will increase going left
I’d better know it so I can pass my test

Pre-chorus1 :
Got a feeling that I’ll fail the math test
But I know that the teacher might be sad
If I don’t study there’s a consequence
An F

Chorus:
I study math until I can’t sleep
When I am snoozing then I count sheep
Now I’m a expert engineer
The math I learned is clear
I don’t understand these
I’m begging “teacher come and help please”
And now that I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s

Verse 2:
Just like subtraction to division
Oh my hands hurt so I couldn’t do addition
These operations squish my brain
Now I’m gonna keep what I know
Use operations so I’m not slow

Pre-chorus 2:
Got a feeling that I’ll ace the math test
So I know that I’ll feel like Superman
Since I studied I feel like the best
I aced it

Chorus:
I study math until I can’t sleep
When I am snoozing then I count sheep
Now I’m a expert engineer
The math I learned is clear
I don’t understand these
I’m begging “teacher come and help please”
And now that I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s

Bridge:
Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein
Numbers on a line, yeah
It takes some time

Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein
Numbers on a line, yeah
It’s perfectly fine

Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein
Numbers on a line, yeah
It’s perfectly fine

Numbers on a line
I’m smarter than Einstein, smarter than Einstein

Chorus:
I study math until I can’t sleep
When I am snoozing then I count sheep
Now I’m a expert engineer
The math I learned is clear
I don’t understand these
I’m begging “teacher come and help please”
And now that I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s

Coda:
I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s
I’ve learned operations
I’ll be getting straight A’s

Do My Math Better (by Mrs. Lovell’s class)

structure:
verse1: Operations: multiplication addition subtraction addition / menu / stacking
verse2: Rounding
Bridge: Number line
Chorus: Math in real life / how I feel about math class / quiz /

verse 1:
I will add for you
All these math facts we’ve got to use
You can tell me if I’m wrong if I add them incorrectly
When you see that you have aced a quiz
And you’re spending all your time on this one operation
And when you thought that you were a whiz

chorus:
I know that I can do my homework like a boss
But Rex the doggie chewed it up and now it’s lost
Teacher asked, “Where’s your sheet?”
It’s underneath my feet
I thought I was in trouble instead
I know that I did my homework
Don’t give me an “F”

verse 2:
I'll round numbers too
The digit’s value is your clue
Five or above give it a shove, four or below then let it go
Baby rounding numbers with you
Rounding could be so easy, if you tried to do it
Tell me, what do I round to

chorus
I know that I can do my homework like a boss
But Rex the doggie chewed it up and now it’s lost
Teacher asked, “Where’s your sheet?”
It’s underneath my feet
I thought I was in trouble instead
I know that I did my homework
Don’t give me an “F”

bridge:
Draw me a line
Make it straight, we’ll be fine
Arrows they go on the ends
Just know that you can
Because there’s no end
I’ll be by your side the whole time

chorus
I know that I can do my homework like a boss
But Rex the doggie chewed it up and now it’s lost
Teacher asked, “Where’s your sheet?”
It’s underneath my feet
I thought I was in trouble instead
I know that I did my homework
Don’t give me an “F”

coda:
Don’t give me an “F”

Treat You Better (Shawn Mendes)
capo 1:
AmGF
I won't lie to you
I know he's just not right for you
And you can tell me if I'm off
But I see it on your face
When you say that he's the one that you want
And you're spending all your time
In this wrong situation
And anytime you want it to stop

chorus:
Am GF
I know I can treat you better
C
Than he can
And any girl like you deserves a gentleman
Tell me why are we wasting time
On all your wasted crime
When you should be with me instead
I know I can treat you better
Better than he can

v2:
I'll stop time for you
The second you say you'd like me too
I just wanna give you the loving that you're missing
Baby, just to wake up with you
Would be everything I need and this could be so different
Tell me what you want to do
chorus

bridge:
Give me a sign
Take my hand, we'll be fine
Promise I won't let you down
Just know that you don't
Have to do this alone
Promise I'll never let you down
chorus

That was easy
There are different place values
An example is the ones
