3rd and 4th Grade: geometry and inventions

Songs: Call Me Maybe; Beat It; Uptown Funk; Stitches
The students at Arundel E/M school are in Baltimore City, not Ann Arundel County. They wrote these clever songs and sang them to each other on our final day.

Uptown Think It Up - parody of Uptown Funk
grade 4, inventions;

verse 1:
This is my bicycle
It’s white, nice and pretty gold
Ride my bike to buy pearls
All them girls keep on chasing me
Ridin’, wheelin’, my kickstand so pretty
No training wheels on my bike
Ridin’ all around the city

pre-chorus:
It’s too hard (hard yeah)
Inventions make you lazy, man
It’s too hard (hard yeah)
Don’t even remember numbers, man
It’s too hard (hard yeah)
My TV will know who I am
It’s too hard, (hard yeah)
Am I bad ‘bout taking stairs (escalator)

chorus:
Learning ‘bout inventions, ooh
Learning ‘bout inventions, ooh
Learning ‘bout inventions, ooh
Cuz all those inventors gonna give it to you
Cuz all those inventors gonna give it to you
Cuz all those inventors gonna give it to you
Every night of my life is nice
Don’t believe me just watch, come on!
Oooh-wah! Don’t believe me just watch
Oooh-wah! Don’t believe me just watch
Don’t believe me just watch
Don’t believe me just watch
Don’t believe me just watch
Hey hey hey, oh

verse 2:
Stop! Wait a minute
Get my potato put some eyes on it
Take a bite, sign a check
Julio, get the cooking
Cook it, to 90 degrees
So it won’t burn up, yum yummy
If we put it in and take it out
Smooth on a fresh pat o’ butter
pre-chorus:
It’s too hard (hard yeah)
Inventions make you lazy, man
It’s too hard (hard yeah)
Don’t even remember numbers, man
It’s too hard (hard yeah)
My TV will know who I am
It’s too hard, (hard yeah)
Am I bad ‘bout taking stairs (escalator)

chorus:
Learning ‘bout inventions, ooh
Learning ‘bout inventions, ooh
Learning ‘bout inventions, ooh
Cuz all those inventors gonna give it to you
Cuz all those inventors gonna give it to you
Cuz all those inventors gonna give it to you
Every night my life is nice
Don’t believe me just watch, come on!
Oooh-wah! Don’t believe me just watch
Oooh-wah! Don’t believe me just watch
Don’t believe me just watch
Don’t believe me just watch
Don’t believe me just watch
Hey hey hey, oh

bridge:
Uptown bubble gum,
Uptown lovn’ gum
Uptown bubble gum,
Uptown lovin gum
Come on chew, chew on it
If you chew it in the mornin’
Every night of my life is nice
Don’t believe me just watch, come on!
Oooh-wah! Don’t believe me just watch

Uptown think it up (you better think!)
Uptown think it up
Uptown think it up (you gotta brain!)
Uptown think it up
Uptown think it up (you gotta brain!)
Uptown think it up
Uptown think it up (you better think!)

Stitches parody - geometry

verse 1: how to find the area; multiply
You have to multiply the sides
Or you add the units up inside
We stuck some tape down on the floor
And we counted units up more and more

pre-chorus: how math class feels to me
I think that math is challenging
I wrote this song in math for us to sing
I think i might be going crazy
Move on

chorus: shapes and their attributes
We learned 'bout polygons with straight lines
And parallelograms with four sides
A bunch of Rectangles and Squares
Trapezoids right there
So every time we use shapes
My teacher helped me cuz she’s so great
My class worked really hard
Earned dojo points and stars

verse 2: how to find perimeter: add sides
You have to add up all the sides
To find perimeter and get it right
My dog chased the mailman away
So I had to build a fence so he’ll just stay

pre-chorus: how math class feels to me
I think that math is challenging
I wrote this song in math for us to sing
I think i might be going crazy
Move on

chorus: shapes and their attributes
We learned 'bout polygons with straight lines
And parallelograms with four sides
A bunch of Rectangles and Squares
Trapezoids right there
So every time we use shapes
My teacher helped me cuz she’s so great
My class worked really hard
Earned dojo points and stars

bridge: describe shapes: flat, pointy, etc

Learning About Shapes - parody of Call Me Maybe - geometry

verse 1:
We counted all of the tiles
The Length times width for a mile
So hard it might take a while
Were stuck in school all day

verse 2:
I saw a wall in my way
Now it was so far away
Measured rectangles all day
Perimeter is sixteen

pre-chorus:
Math class is getting boring
Hours and hours every morning
Big test all high scoring
Lets go cuz its finally lunch time

chorus:
You learn it in math, rectangles are cool
The sides are straight, I learned in school
Right angles four sides, thats the rule,
Shapes are awesome, my brains a tool

verse 3:
A hexagon has six sides
A pentagon it has five
An octagon has eight sides
A stop signs in my way

verse 4:
I saw a square on the floor
I counted five thousand more
----?
-----?
pre-chorus
chorus

Bridge:
Before third grade we didnt know
We didnt know that
Geometry aint so bad

Beat It parody - inventions

verse 1:
They told him don’t you eat your gum around here
Throw it in the trash just make it disappear
If you swallow it gets stuck in your gut for several years,
Don’t chew it, or eat it

verse 2:
You better ride your bike to get from ‘round here
You spin the pedals and rotate the gears
If you pedal too fast, you oughta be scared
So stop it, just squeeze the brakes

chorus:
so spin it, pedal it, squeeze it, rotate it
Inventions are so creative
Do lots of jobs, they help our lives
Just like a stapler, they make it all right
So speed it, so speed it

verse 3:
You’d better lock the door or they’ll get in your house
Turn your front door key to keep them out
If your back door is unlocked they’ll come and sleep on your couch
So lock it, or they’ll steal your things

verse 4:
Money’s so important on the earth these days
People wanna hide it, lock it in a case
I wonder who made it, doesn’t matter anyway
So save it, keep it in a vase

chorus:
so spin it, pedal it, squeeze it, rotate it
Inventions are so creative
Do lots of jobs, they help our lives
Just like a stapler, they make it all right
So speed it, so speed it
