Emma K Doub ES Students write super songs this year!

Songs we used this time:
All About That Bass; What About Love?; Shake it Off

Students at one of my favorite elementary schools wrote fantastic parody songs with me this past week. The third-graders were studying the science of sound, which includes vibration, waves, sound discrimination, anatomy of the ear, etc. They chose three fun pop music songs to parody and here are the lyrics:

All About That Sound (parody of All About That Bass)

Chorus:
Because you know I’m all about that sound, ‘bout that sound, vibrations
I am all about that sound, ‘bout that sound, vibrations
I’m all about that sound, ‘bout that sound, vibrations
I’m all about that sound, ‘bout that sound

verse 1:
Yeah it’s pretty loud, this drum I play for you
And it will vibrate, vibrate, like it’s supposed to do
Because there’s lots of tension when you hit the top
When there’s less room to vibrate, it will stop!

verse 2:
I hear that sound go up and down and all around
We know that sounds have pitch, high up or far low down
A massive elephant will make the deepest sound
‘Cause every note is high or low pitched as I think you might’ve found

Yeah, my teacher she taught me about sound waves today
(sha-ooh, wup wup, sha-ooh, wup wup)
And she told us,” The lower the sound is the slower the wave”
    (s-wavy wavy, s-wavy wavy)
You know the faster the frequency is, the higher the sound
(sha-ooh, wup wup, sha-ooh, wup wup)
So, if sounds what you’re into
Just turned the knob so it’s loud!

chorus
Because you know I’m all about that sound, ‘bout that sound, vibrations
I am all about that sound, ‘bout that sound, vibrations
I’m all about that sound, ‘bout that sound, vibrations
I’m all about that sound, ‘bout that sound

verse 3:
Do you hear that sound?
Go ahead and tell them turn the volume down
Music too loud it makes my eardrums pound
My stirrup’s so fragile and
Your ears are real important from the inner to the outer

I can play the piano and it has vibrating strings
(sha-ooh, wup wup, sha-ooh, wup wup)
The 28th keys on the xylophone go ding
(yeah do it do it, yeah do it do it)
He said the beat keeps the music going head on strong
(sha-ooh, wup wup, sha-ooh, wup wup)
So if that’s what you’re into
Then go ahead and sing-along

chorus

(FYI: the original song has lyrics that are inappropriate for children, but we used a clean version by Kidz Bop, and I think that at least at a simple level the song has a positive message about body image.)

What About Soung
(parody of All About That Love by Austin Mahone)
verse 1:
I, I’m feeling your vibration
Your communication
This eardrum is hurting
And I, I hear that earth shaking
I hear the vibration
Traveling waves bounce off your ear

You say you here all day
All the sounds
I hope the decibels aren’t crazy

But what about sound?
What about our vocal chords?
What about ears?
You hear sound all around the world
What about sound?
Pitch is high and low all the time
What about pitch?
This bird has no strings but it’s singing
And about sound?
What about ears?

verse 2:
Why do we hear thunder?
We’d better duck under
To stop the vibration, yeah
And protect your eardrums
Please try to remember
We don’t want is hurting, quiet please

You’re hearing many sounds
Very loud
I’ll take the soft sounds, soft sounds

Chorus

bridge:
Your ears are sound receivers
What about, what about sound?
Vibrations hit your eardrum
What about, what about sound?
It zaps a signal to your brain
What about, what about sound?
Now you know what the sound is trying to say
What about, what about sound?

You’re hearing many sounds
Really loud
Vibrations pluck a string, high-pitched
You’re hearing many sounds
It’s screaming
I’ll take them the low sounds, high sounds

Chorus

Back and Forth (parody of Shake it Off)
verse 1:
I got wax in my ear, it’s pretty hard to hear
Discrimination, mm-mm, discrimination, mm-mm
Sources make the sound, We hear them out loud
Low sounds on the ground, mm-mm, high sounds all-around, mm-mm

Dog whistles high
Poodles hear them cry
But I hear a trombone playing notes
And it’s really low

‘Cause the vibrations gone be high, high, high, high
The vibrations is gonna make you cry
The vibrations gonna shake shake shake shake shake
Back-and-forth, Back and forth
The vibrations going to sound low low low low
The vibrations going to be slow slow slow slow
The vibrations gonna shake shake shake shake shake
Back-and-forth, Back and forth

verse 2:
The pitch tells high and low, vibrations fast and slow
And that’s what we know, mm-mm, and that’s how they go, mm-mm
Short bars make sounds high (make sounds high),
Might even make you cry (even make you cry)
And we will tell you why, mm-mm, and we will tell you why, mm-mm

Tension is pulling
The pitches are dueling
It’s like there is this strong force in the strings shaking back and forth

Chorus

bridge:
Hey hey hey, just think while you’ve been wondering about sound and the vibrations in the world, this tension is getting faster and faster.
My ex teacher brought her new flute
It went root-a-toot toot, but I’m just gonna hear it
She played it very loud and you can hear it all downtown
Fast and slow vibrations here it with your ear ear ear

Chorus
