Grade 3 Parodies at Westbrook Elementary School 2022

Brains That Will Think - Ms. J/Ms. B’s class parody of Surface Pressure (Encanto)

Verse 1:

I’m the smart one, I do planning

When you get smarter I’m expanding

I contro-ol, I’m demanding

The frontal lobe is always commanding

Cerebellum is how I’m landing

The amazing brain stem keeps me standing

Occipital lobe, always used around the globe

Temporal lobe helps with memory flow

Prechorus 1:

Inside your brain you can think like a

Mastermind in an undercover mission

Inside your brain

Have you ever been, “Yo I don’t wanna go to math class”

Inside the brain

I’m pretty sure it’s worthless if the brain can’t focus

A flaw or a crack, the pain in the brain

That breaks the mind’s focus

What breaks the mind’s focus

Chorus:

Brains that will think think think and will never stop, whoa-oh

Helps you remember everything you’re taught whoa-oh-oh-oh

Leave it to your mind, your mind works harder

Provide it all the choices that may be smarter

Where would you be without the brain at all, you would fall too

Noggins that will work work work till you know it all, whoa-oh

Helps you remember all the problems you will solve, whoa-oh-oh-oh

Hand it to your mind, your mind is stronger

See if it can think a little longer

What is the brain if it can’t do it all? If it halts…

Prechorus 2:

Inside your brain

You couldn’t walk or talk, it would be massive pain

Inside your brain

Your brain doesn’t quit even if you fall into a pit

Inside your brain,

It tells when to eat, it tells your heart to beat

It makes your bones grow, it helps your blood flow

You try to stop your bad thoughts but on and on it goes

Bridge:

But wait, if I could make this awful ache

Of reading small words it worsens the awful migraine

Or concussion, or all the loud noises

Instead we wish we had a cold ice pack

Keeps growing, exploding, all the the awful pain

Chorus:

Brains that will think think think and will never stop, whoa-oh

Helps you remember everything you’re taught whoa-oh-oh-oh

Leave it to your mind, your mind works harder

Provide it all the choices that may be smarter

Where would you be without the brain at all, you would fall to

Noggins that will work work work till you know it all, whoa-oh

Helps you remember all the problems you will solve, whoa-oh-oh-oh

Hand it to your mind, your mind is stronger

See if it can think a little longer

What is the brain if it can’t do it all?

Coda

No breaks, no aches, no mistakes

Our smart brains!!

Animals find prey under rocks every day

Till the moment the sun sets at night

(How far do these holes go down)

But it’s awesome to see how they hide

How far can grass grow

Through the dirt to the skies

Let’s grow

I hear them croaking in the forest

Hummingbirds

Porcupines

Attracting pollinators with my smell

And that’s where they thrive

Adaptations you know-ow

Verse 2:

Grew to live in fear, predators hunting and grunting

Minnows petrified cuz a big fish is coming

Big teeth are crunching so you’d better hide in the sand, ch-ch-ch

Thank goodness that shark went away bubbling

Now that it’s gone we can go home running

All the fishermen are going back to land

Do you understand

Pre Chorus 2:

Snakes have sharp fangs, they hide in shady caves

Smell with their tongues and have hard scales

Yeah camels have bumps, water in their humps

Adaptations you know-ow-ow-ow-ow

Adaptations you know-ow

Verse 3:

Remember the megalodon, the next day extinct

Adaptations are needed or else you should rethink

Everybody needs some adaptations

So that they can survive

If you don’t have them then you won’t be alive

Bridge 1:

In the grasslands cheetahs wait all day

Tip-toeing around their prey

Zebras got stripes to confuse all the lions

They better watch out when they stray

God told me that I could survive here

Animals use their spots

To not be yummy lunch

It’s like I could see them now

Creatures have a lot of adaptations in the wild

They’re camouflaging

Pre Chorus 2:

Snakes have sharp fangs, they hide in shady caves

Smell with their tongues and have hard scales

Yeah camels have bumps, water in their humps

Chorus:

Adaptations you know-ow-ow-ow-ow

Adaptations you know-ow

Chorus:  I am not the bad guy!

Verse 1:

Red in a hood walking through the woods.

Looking like she had some tasty pastries

Asked Red for a muffin

She gave me somethin’

Finally, I can eat something other than nothin

Verse 2:

Got to her place saw her warty old face

found Granny in the closet and she ran away

Red yelled nasty question

Gave me indigestion

Red ran away cause of all the action

Verse 3:

Feeling satisfied with my muffin

Skippin’ down to the first pig’s house a second course…

Oops! my big fat cough

Found some pork chops

This time it was a stick house that I coughed down

Walking down a lane, what a pain

I see a brick house, feeling like I ate a ten pound Twix

Your brothers are dead

And now I’m fed

All locked up in the little pork’s shed

Parody by grade 2 at Benjamin Foulois Elementary!

A great time with these songwriters! All done over Zoom! In 3 sessions! Wow!

Read It! (parody of Beat It)

Mrs. Nimmons told me to read everyday
But reading books is hard I’d rather go and play
I keep trying but my brain is depleted today
So read it, just read it

I know the words, but I need to understand
Use my background knowledge and find what I can
I activate my brain, yes the answer’s in my hands
So read it, ‘cause I wanna be smart

Just read it, read it, read it, read it
Get yourself a book you need it
Time to stop playing and pick up a book
It doesn’t matter, so if you look
Just read, read it, read it

They're trying stop me from reading as planned
Don’t wanna be scared it’s just has chapters, man
I gotta get this done to get to understand
So read it, just read it

You have to show people that you’re really smart
Break down the text into a smaller part
Use your reading strategies, that’s where you can start
So read it, cause you want to be smart

So read it, read it, read it, read it
Get yourself a book you need it
Time to stop playing and pick up a book
Don’t read too much or you’ll end up hooked
Just read it, read it
Just read it, read it

Anne Arundel County Teachers write a parody with me about Virtual Teaching!

Had a great time with about AACPS 21 teachers in a virtual PD, where we wrote about the trials and tribulations about teaching online classes. I’m proud that they were so game, and that they completed this song in about 15 minutes!

Teach You Maybe! - parody of Call Me Maybe

Log into Classroom right now
Turn mic off don't make a sound
Stay focused don't fool around
Complete work then TURN IN.

Please plug in your microphone
Even though were home alone
Online school who would've known
It's school in a new way

Pre-chorus:
Yes we can hear you
Closed mouth when you chew
Come back we're not through
No clothes on a school crime.

Chorus:
Hey. It's a strange time. And we're online how?
So get a device. I will teach you now.
And wear your PJs. Ready to say wow!
It's online learning. I will teach you now!

Another AACPS Teacher PD, summer of 2020, wrote this parody of Call Me Maybe:

Log into Classroom right now
Turn mic off don't make a sound
Stay focused don't fool around
Complete work then TURN IN

Please plug in your microphone
Even though were home alone
Online school who would've known
It's school in a new way

Pre-chorus:
Yes we can hear you
Closed mouth when you chew
Come back we're not through
No clothes on at school crime

Chorus:
Hey. It's a strange time. And we're online how?
So get a device. I will teach you now.
And wear your PJs. Ready to say wow!
It's online learning. I will teach you now!

Teachers Writing Parody during Covid

Teachers are working so hard to Zoom with all their students, so I hope my songwriting workshop was a bit of respite for the Anne Arundel County teachers who joined my virtual workshop on May 26. We learned about writing a parody and how it could be used for teaching. Finally we wrote our own parody of Call Me Maybe, called Teach You Maybe.

Teach You Maybe?

V1
I coughed and sneezed in your face
Hogan made us stay in place
So we stocked our liquor case
And there's still no Charmin
I'd trade my soul for wine
Even if I stand in line
And 6 feet apart is fine
And there's still no Charmin

V2:
My microphone has cut out
But you can still see my my pout
i want to scream and to shout
But you can't hear anyway

Pre- Chorus
Do I have my coffee?
Wait I need to go pee
Does my face look happy
Let's get this Google Meet Thing Poppin'!

Chorus:
Hey, I miss you, and times are crazy,
But here’s my meet code, so join me maybe?
It’s hard not being together lately, but here’s my meet code, so join me maybe?
Hey, I miss you, and times are crazy
But here’s my meet code, so join me maybe?
And I hope to see you in person maybe
But here's my meet code, so join me maybe?

V3
You have to work to get smart
Math reading science and the arts
We all have to do our part
'Cause we're in virtual school

V4:
I really miss you, my friends,
and all your pencils and pens
Can't wait 'til this whole thing ends
When will this be over?

Fraction Apocalypse
Written by Fifth Grade Flamingos - parody of Radioactive - Topic: fractions
Produced by Alden Phelps and Ms. Jones

I’m waking up, I’ve got a test
And I know I’m gonna do my best
I’ve gotta convert my fraction
Yayyy (sarcastically)
The fractions bar, it separates
The whole and the parts, ain't no debate
When I learn, gotta take it slow
Whoa

It's in my mind it's in my head and soul
The top is how much you can hold
The bottom is how much you need, how much you need
The bottom is how much you need, for a whole
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
We're learning fractions, these are the actions
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
We're learning fractions, with no distractions

Operations, you gotta be patient
Get it wrong there's no vacation
Addition, gets numbers real big
Whoa
Multiply the simplify
To identify like a private eye
Butterfly, that's how you divide
Whoa

The numerator is goes really high
It sits on top of the fraction line
The denominator, it goes way under
The denominator, it goes way under
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
We're learning fractions, these are the actions
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
We're learning fractions, with no distractions

That mini pie, needs ½ cup strawberries
Measure it right, or else you won't be pleased

You really need equivalent fraction
For addition, subtraction
Bro these are the fraction, yo the fractions
Of addition and sub, and subtraction
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
We're learning fractions, these are the actions
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
We're learning fractions, with no distractions

Songs by SummerReads 2019 students: Windsor Hills ES

This summer I’m teaching two SummerReads residencies, where we have a few days to write a song together. I’ve focused on the theme of space travel in our books.

Parody of Beat It based on the book Moustronaut
Moustronaut was getting ready to go
To take a trip to Mars, he was ready though
But they didn't call his name, so he had to stow
So fly it, just fly it

5-4-3-2-1 blasted off to space
Take a trip to Mars, at the red place
The lander didn't work so Moustronaut took their place
Just fly it, Moustronaut saved the day!

chorus:
Just fly it, fly it, fly it, fly it
He stowed away, he tried it
Used the ship to land on Mars
Moustronaut reaching for the stars
Just fly it

Parody of Beat It - theme of space travel
I built a rocket to go to space
I left the earth to go to another place
I was flying so high, but it took a couple days
So leave it, just leave it

They told me you don't even wanna see Mars
You will never make it cuz it's too far
But I made it anyway and I flew to the stars
I made it, just made it

chorus:
Just leave it, leave it, leave it, leave it
Going to the moon to see it
Flying a rocket in outer space
Traveling to a whole 'nother place
Just leave it
